The Arts are essential to a healthy and robust society. When artists can freely engage with practices that develop well-being and insight they can help sustain the vision and atmosphere needed for a thriving world. Here at Origins, we want to support the creative nature of humanity in the ways that we can. By making mindfulness, meditation, yoga and other nourishing practices available to artists we hope their work can be coupled with good mental health, optimism and respect.
The Origins Artist Residency program is open to emerging and experienced artists of all ages and disciplines.
Each residency lasts from one to four weeks. Each artist gets a private room with power for accommodation, a cabin in the forest for a studio (two have no power, one does have power), access to a workshop and to a beautiful space with great acoustics for movement or music making. We have shared facilities for cooking, washing and ablutions. We ask for a payment of $25 per night (to cover accomodation costs). A cultural contribution of a workshop, artist talk, performance or donation of an artwork is suggested, but not required. Sometimes the artist will cover their accommodation costs by holding a workshop, with all donations from the workshop going directly to the artist.

We are particularly seeking regional/local artists but we are very much open to interstate or international artists.

For artists on tight budgets, we have ways that one can reduce their costs of stay, either by additional work for the centre making products for our shop, or through community work. Generally 1 hour per day will pay for 1 nights accommodation, however this is provided that there is work needed at the centre. Origins will preference artists who can self-fund their residency.

This proposal should include:
  • How you intend to utilise your stay.
  • The time-frame you wish to stay (we offer 1-4 week residencies).
  • How you intend to pay for the residency, either self-funded or with a grant (we can offer a letter of support if needed).
  • Examples of your work.
  • Links to websites.
  • What cultural contribution you could make to the community? Artist talk, open studio, workshop, donation of work, etc?

From here a dialogue will begin and we can work towards a potential residency.

Anne Clark is a Co-Director at the Origins Centre and teacher of pottery and mindfulness. We have a purpose built, fully equipped cabin with attached studio and kilns that are available. Potters please inquire through Anne via origins@iinet.net.au.

The Artist Residency Program is currently on hold until 2021.
