Starts Wed March 6, 5:30 - 7:00pm at Coorain, 64 Lukis Street, Balingup. The course runs every Wed for 5 weeks (6, 13, 20, 27 March and 3 April).
'Over six weeks this will be an accessible exploration of the crucible from which our modern culture arose - a series of questions posed by Greek-speakers living on the Aegean islands and the coast of Asia Minor between about 600-400 BCE. They range from the political - how can we live together? - to investigating the nature of reality - what is the world made of? - and the skeptic’s eternally thorny - can we ever really know anything? Questioning tradition and rejecting superstition, these teachers became known as philosophers - literally “lovers of wisdom” - and were followed by later figures such as Socrates and his student, Plato. We will examine their ideas in context, looking forwards and backwards in time, tracing origins to the civilisations of Babylon, Egypt and Vedic India, and discussing the enduring importance and relevance of such concerns today.'
Sholto will provide a light supper of soup and bread. The cost is by donation and participants must enrol to ensure adequate numbers. Please e-mail Sholto to register: sholto@iinet.net.au
